OctaFX (Elev8) vs XM: Honest 2026 Comparison

Minimum deposit, spreads, leverage, regulation and platforms — side by side, with the figures we could actually verify.

Short version: XM is the more broadly regulated broker, and OctaFX (now Elev8) is the lighter, offshore option with a proprietary platform and copy trading. Both are commission-free MT4/MT5 brokers aimed at a similar audience, so the honest differences are in regulation, entry cost and platform. Below we put the verified figures side by side — and where a number isn't confirmed for XM, we say “check XM's current terms”.

The one difference that matters most: XM holds tier-1 licences (CySEC in Cyprus and ASIC in Australia) alongside offshore ones. OctaFX/Elev8 operates offshore only — FSC Mauritius and MISA in the Comoros — with no tier-1 licence. If regulatory protection is your priority, that gap is the headline.

Figures reflect each broker's published terms and vary by entity, account and country. OctaFX/Elev8 numbers are from our broker comparison; XM figures we couldn't confirm are flagged below — check XM's current terms.

Regulation: where XM clearly wins

This is the cleanest win in the comparison, and it goes to XM. Under its Trading Point group entities, XM holds tier-1 licences from CySEC (Cyprus) and ASIC (Australia), alongside offshore and regional licences (FSC Belize, DFSA in Dubai, FSCA in South Africa). Tier-1 regulators impose stricter capital, conduct and client-money rules, and CySEC clients get Investor Compensation Fund cover.

OctaFX/Elev8, by contrast, operates offshore only. After the February 2026 rebrand it runs under two entities: Elev8 Markets LTD (Mauritius, regulated by the FSC) and Finexis Markets Ltd (the Comoros/MISA-licensed entity). The FSC of Mauritius is one of the more reputable offshore regulators but is not tier-1; MISA in the Comoros is a weak, lightly-regulated offshore authority — the Comoros central bank has publicly disputed MISA's authority to issue financial licences. The former OctaFX group's CySEC (EU) entity was not carried into the Elev8 brand, so Elev8 is not CySEC-regulated.

Plain terms: XM gives you tier-1 oversight in at least two major jurisdictions; OctaFX/Elev8 gives you offshore oversight only. That doesn't make OctaFX “a scam” — plenty of traders use offshore brokers — but it's a real difference in the protection behind your deposit. Size your positions accordingly. And neither badge is a substitute for your own checks: XM's own Trustpilot sits around 3.8/5 across 2,500+ reviews, with complaints about withdrawal delays and spread widening.

Minimum deposit & spreads

Entry cost: XM wins on paper. XM's minimum deposit is as low as $5, versus OctaFX's from $25 (which itself varies by payment method and region). XM's floor is lower — though both are firmly beginner-friendly, and a $20 difference shouldn't decide anything on its own.

EUR/USD spread: this one is close, and honest framing matters because these are floating, best-case “from” figures. OctaFX's EUR/USD is reported in a ~0.6–1.1 pip range depending on account and source, commission-free. XM quotes from ~0.6 pips on its no-commission Ultra Low account and as low as ~0.1 pips on the Zero account (which charges a commission). So XM's headline best-case is lower, but only on a commission account — add the commission back and the all-in cost narrows. For a beginner on a standard commission-free account, the two are broadly comparable; the spread alone isn't a strong reason to pick one over the other.

We haven't independently measured live spreads on either broker, so treat every figure as indicative — the binding number is in your own terminal. For XM's exact current spread, check XM's current terms.

Leverage

Both brokers advertise very high maximum leverage on their offshore entities, and both cap it hard in regulated regions — so this is roughly a wash, with the important detail being which entity you're on.

  • OctaFX (Elev8): up to 1:500 as the global standard, with 1:1000 in some regions or promotions, and 1:30 for EU (CySEC-era) clients.
  • XM: up to 1:1000 on the offshore (Belize FSC) entity, and 1:30 for EU/UK/AU retail clients under ESMA/FCA/ASIC caps.

The honest read: on their top offshore tiers, XM's headline 1:1000 edges OctaFX's typical 1:500 — but OctaFX also offers 1:1000 in some regions, so which is actually higher depends on where you sign up. Neither figure is universal, and high leverage cuts both ways: it magnifies losses as fast as gains. Don't let a bigger leverage number be the reason you choose a broker.

Platforms & extras

Here OctaFX has the edge on breadth. Both brokers give you the industry-standard MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5. Beyond that, OctaFX also runs its own proprietary platform, OctaTrader (referred to as Elev8Trader under the new brand), plus a mobile app and built-in copy trading. XM offers MT4, MT5 and WebTrader — a solid, familiar stack, with TradingView charts added, but no proprietary desktop platform of the same kind.

If you only ever use MetaTrader, this is a tie — both cover MT4/MT5 fully. If you want an all-in-one proprietary web platform and integrated copy trading, OctaFX/Elev8 gives you more out of the box. For XM's current platform line-up, check XM's current terms.

Pick OctaFX if… / Pick XM if…

Neither broker is “the winner” in the abstract — it depends on what you weight. The honest split:

Pick OctaFX (Elev8) if…

  • You want a proprietary all-in-one platform (OctaTrader/Elev8Trader) and built-in copy trading, not just MetaTrader.
  • You're comfortable with an offshore broker and trading a modest balance you've sized for that risk.
  • Regional payment rails and a commission-free standard account matter more to you than a tier-1 badge.

Pick XM if…

  • Regulatory protection is your priority — XM's tier-1 CySEC and ASIC licences are the strongest reason to choose it.
  • You want the lowest entry point (from $5) or a commission-based Zero account with a very tight headline spread.
  • You're happy on the standard MT4/MT5/WebTrader stack and don't need a proprietary platform.

For a fuller side-by-side including Exness, see our broker comparison. Whichever way you lean, verify the live figures in-account first.

Bottom line

XM wins on regulation and entry cost; OctaFX/Elev8 wins on platform breadth and copy trading; spreads and leverage are close. The single most important, non-close difference is regulation: XM carries tier-1 licences (CySEC + ASIC) while OctaFX/Elev8 is offshore only (FSC Mauritius + MISA Comoros). If protection behind your deposit matters most, that points to XM. If you specifically want OctaTrader and copy trading and you've sized your risk for an offshore broker, OctaFX is a reasonable pick — just go in with eyes open. Everything above reflects published terms and the figures we could verify; the numbers we couldn't confirm for XM, check in XM's current terms rather than trust a copied figure.

FAQ

Is OctaFX (Elev8) or XM better regulated?

XM is more broadly regulated. XM holds tier-1 licences from CySEC (Cyprus) and ASIC (Australia) alongside offshore ones, while OctaFX/Elev8 operates under offshore regulators only — the FSC in Mauritius and MISA in the Comoros — with no tier-1 licence. The former OctaFX CySEC entity was not carried into the Elev8 brand.

Which has the lower minimum deposit, OctaFX or XM?

XM, on paper. XM's minimum deposit is as low as $5, while OctaFX (Elev8) is from $25 and varies by payment method and region. Both are low, beginner-friendly entry points, so the difference is small in practice.

Are OctaFX and XM spreads similar?

They're broadly comparable on a standard commission-free account. OctaFX's EUR/USD is roughly 0.6–1.1 pips floating; XM is from about 0.6 pips on its no-commission Ultra Low account, dropping to around 0.1 pips on the commission-based Zero account (add the commission back and the all-in cost narrows). These are best-case 'from' figures that float — confirm the live spread in your terminal.

Which offers higher leverage?

Both advertise up to 1:1000 on their offshore entities (OctaFX typically 1:500 as standard, 1:1000 in some regions; XM up to 1:1000 on its Belize entity), and both cap leverage at 1:30 for EU/UK/AU retail clients. Which is actually higher depends on the entity and region you sign up under. High leverage magnifies losses as fast as gains.

Can I use MetaTrader with both?

Yes. Both OctaFX (Elev8) and XM support MT4 and MT5. OctaFX also has its own proprietary platform (OctaTrader/Elev8Trader) plus copy trading; XM adds a WebTrader and TradingView charts. For XM's current platform line-up, check XM's current terms.
